Planning a Kimono Pre-Wedding Shoot in Japan? A Guide for International Couples

"I don't even know where to start."
That's the most common thing I hear from international couples who want Japanese-style pre-wedding photos. You love the idea of wearing a kimono in front of a historic castle — but the language barrier, the unfamiliar customs, and the sheer number of decisions can make it feel overwhelming.
At studio m's in Matsumoto, Nagano, I work with international couples regularly. Basic English communication is no problem — enough to get to know you and understand what you're looking for.
What Is a "Maedori" (前撮り)?
In Japan, many couples choose to have a dedicated photo session before the wedding day — called 前撮り (maedori, meaning "pre-shoot").
Unlike Western engagement photos, maedori sessions often involve full traditional dress: kimono, obi, and elaborate hair and makeup. It's a chance to wear a wedding kimono without the time pressure of the actual ceremony, and to create portrait-quality images you'll treasure for life.
You don't need to be having a Japanese-style wedding to do this. Many international couples — and Japanese-foreign couples — choose maedori simply because they want beautiful photos in kimono, in Japan.
What You Can Expect at studio m's
Everything in one place
Choosing a kimono for the first time is not simple — there are color, pattern, and style decisions that can feel endless. At studio m's, I help you choose the right outfit together, then handle the rest:
Kimono selection — I guide you through the options as a couple
Dressing (kitsuke) — professional fitting on the day
Hair and makeup — done by a licensed beauty professional, at the studio
No need to visit multiple locations or coordinate between different vendors.
My studio
I have approximately 7 different studio sets, ranging from traditional Japanese rooms to lighter, modern Western-style spaces. Sets are updated from time to time, so the options available may vary — but I'll share the current lineup when you get in touch.
I also offer outdoor shoots at Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's most famous original castles and just a short distance from the studio.
Communication — English ok
My English is conversational — enough to chat, understand your vision, and make the shoot day feel relaxed. For anything more detailed, we can use translation tools together. No need to worry about the language barrier.
